For centralized inverters, shadowing will cause the efficiency of the entire system to decrease by 50%. For micro-inverters, shadowing only impacts the module being shadowed and reduces efficiency of the entire system by only 10%-20%.
Unlike traditional DC-based string/central inverters which have a high DC voltage of up to 600V, AC systems are less likely to sustain Arc faults (a major cause of PV fires) due to the internal DC voltage being only that of a single PV module. Furthermore, AC micro-inverters can detect abnormalities in the grid voltage and automatically shut off the affected module.
Faster and easier installation and more flexibility with system design means that micro-inverters are suitable for any rooftop shapes. Installing and maintaining AC systems saves time as the inverters are already installed under the panels and no internal DC conduit is required.
